Understanding chronic stress & burnout

What it is, and what we look at

Short-term stress is a normal, useful response. It becomes harmful when the body's alert state stays switched on for months — sleep shortens, muscles stay tense, digestion is affected and concentration falls away. Burnout specifically describes work-related chronic stress that has not been managed, with three features: exhaustion, mental distance or cynicism about the job, and reduced effectiveness.

Chronic stress is a genuine contributor to hypertension, reflux, IBS, migraine and disturbed sleep, so it is treated as a medical issue rather than a personal failing. Case taking covers workload, sleep, caffeine, alcohol, exercise and support structures, and screens for anxiety and depression, which frequently sit underneath and need their own treatment.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Exhaustion that rest does not resolve
Difficulty switching off, and disturbed sleep
Irritability, cynicism or emotional flatness
Tension headaches and neck or jaw tightness
Digestive upset, appetite change and reflux
Reduced concentration and declining work performance

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Sustained workload without recovery periods
  • Lack of control or clarity in a role
  • Caregiving responsibilities and financial pressure
  • Insufficient sleep, which both results from and worsens stress
  • Excess caffeine, alcohol and lack of physical activity

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • There are thoughts of self-harm — seek help the same day
  • There is chest pain, palpitations or breathlessness — cardiac causes need excluding
  • You cannot function at work or at home, or you are using alcohol to cope

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Stress is a response to identifiable external demands and typically eases when they do. Anxiety persists and attaches itself to new worries even when circumstances improve. The two overlap and often coexist — the distinction guides whether the focus should be on the situation or on the anxiety itself.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
