Understanding anxiety

What it is, and what we look at

Anxiety is a normal response that becomes a disorder when it is out of proportion, persistent and disabling. It commonly presents physically first — palpitations, chest tightness, breathlessness, stomach upset, tremor — and many patients see several specialists for these before anxiety is identified as the cause.

The clinic's format allows longer consultations than a typical short appointment, which matters here. Case taking covers what the anxiety attaches to, when it started, sleep, caffeine and alcohol intake, and any thyroid or cardiac symptoms that should be excluded first.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Persistent worry that is hard to control
Palpitations, chest tightness or breathlessness
Restlessness and feeling constantly on edge
Difficulty falling asleep due to racing thoughts
Stomach upset, nausea or frequent urge to pass stool
Difficulty concentrating, irritability and muscle tension

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Genetic predisposition and family history
  • Prolonged stress at work, in study or at home
  • Thyroid overactivity and certain medical conditions
  • Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and stimulant use
  • Past traumatic experience or major life change

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • You have thoughts of harming yourself — seek help the same day
  • Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness occurs (rule out cardiac causes)
  • Anxiety stops you working, studying or leaving the house

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

No. Moderate to severe anxiety responds best to psychological therapy, and medication where indicated. Homeopathic treatment can sit alongside these, but it should not be used as a reason to delay or stop psychiatric care. If your case needs referral, you will be told.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
