Understanding insomnia

What it is, and what we look at

Occasional poor sleep is normal. Insomnia is diagnosed when the difficulty occurs at least three nights a week for three months or more and affects daytime functioning. It frequently becomes self-sustaining: anxiety about not sleeping keeps the body alert, which makes sleep harder, which increases the anxiety.

The most effective established treatment for chronic insomnia is not a tablet but cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), and its core techniques — consistent wake time, restricting time in bed, getting up when unable to sleep — are shared with patients here. Homeopathic treatment is given alongside, with attention to any underlying pain, anxiety, reflux or breathing problem that is disturbing sleep.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Difficulty falling asleep despite feeling tired
Waking repeatedly through the night
Waking very early and being unable to return to sleep
Daytime tiredness, irritability and low concentration
Anxiety about sleep as bedtime approaches
Reliance on sleeping tablets to fall asleep

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Anxiety, stress and depression
  • Irregular sleep timing and shift work
  • Screen exposure and caffeine late in the day
  • Pain, reflux, urinary frequency or breathing problems at night
  • Sleep apnoea, restless legs and some medications

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • You snore loudly and stop breathing during sleep, or wake unrefreshed daily
  • You fall asleep involuntarily while driving or working
  • Insomnia accompanies persistent low mood or thoughts of self-harm

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Often yes, but not abruptly — stopping some sleeping medications suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and, with certain drugs, withdrawal effects. Tapering should be planned with the doctor who prescribed them, with sleep techniques in place first.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
