Understanding sinusitis

What it is, and what we look at

The sinuses are hollow spaces in the bones of the face that drain into the nose. When their lining becomes inflamed and the drainage openings swell shut, mucus collects and pressure builds — felt as pain across the forehead, cheeks or between the eyes, typically worse on bending forward.

Acute sinusitis usually follows a cold and settles within a few weeks. Chronic sinusitis lasts twelve weeks or longer and often sits on top of untreated nasal allergy, a deviated septum or repeated infections. Case taking establishes which pattern you have, since the two are approached differently.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Pain or pressure over the forehead, cheeks or bridge of the nose
Headache that worsens on bending forward
Blocked nose with thick yellow or green discharge
Post-nasal drip and persistent throat clearing
Reduced sense of smell and taste
Facial tenderness, sometimes with toothache in the upper jaw

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Untreated or repeated allergic rhinitis
  • Viral colds and upper respiratory infections
  • Deviated nasal septum or nasal polyps
  • Dust, smoke and occupational irritants
  • Frequent swimming or exposure to cold, damp conditions

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • Severe headache with high fever, neck stiffness or confusion
  • Swelling, redness or pain around the eye, or changes in vision
  • Symptoms lasting beyond ten days and getting worse rather than better

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Antibiotics treat a bacterial infection when one is present, but they do not address the underlying reason the sinuses keep blocking — most often an untreated nasal allergy or a structural narrowing. Recurrence usually means the underlying driver has not been dealt with, which is what a chronic-case assessment tries to identify.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
