Tonsillitis treatment

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, causing sore throat, painful swallowing and fever. Repeated attacks are a common reason families look for a longer-term approach.

Understanding tonsillitis

What it is, and what we look at

The tonsils are lymphoid tissue at the back of the throat and form part of the body's early immune defence. They can become infected by viruses or bacteria, most notably Streptococcus, producing a red swollen throat, sometimes with white patches, along with fever and tender neck glands.

The concern for most families is not a single episode but the pattern — four, five or more attacks a year, each needing antibiotics, often ending in a discussion about removing the tonsils. Case taking looks at the frequency, what precedes each attack, and general immunity, appetite and recovery between episodes.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Sore throat with pain on swallowing
Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white or yellow patches
Fever and chills
Tender, swollen glands in the neck
Bad breath and a muffled voice
Reduced appetite, particularly in children

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Viral infections, which cause the majority of cases
  • Streptococcal and other bacterial infections
  • Close contact in schools and crowded settings
  • Cold drinks, ice creams and exposure to cold in susceptible children
  • Lowered immunity following repeated illness

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • Difficulty breathing, drooling or inability to swallow fluids
  • Fever above 39°C or symptoms lasting beyond four days
  • One-sided severe pain with difficulty opening the mouth

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Tonsillectomy is considered by an ENT surgeon when episodes are frequent and well-documented, or when there is breathing obstruction during sleep. It is a reasonable option in those cases. Many families first want to see whether the frequency can be reduced, which is the aim of constitutional treatment.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
