Understanding recurrent childhood infections

What it is, and what we look at

Young children genuinely do get frequent infections. Six to eight upper respiratory infections a year is within the normal range for a preschool child, and more is common in the first year of daycare or school. This is the immune system learning, not necessarily a defect.

What warrants attention is a pattern outside that range: infections that are unusually severe, that always need antibiotics, that affect growth, or that are accompanied by poor weight gain. Assessment covers frequency and severity, growth chart plotting, appetite, sleep, allergy history, and whether the same site is repeatedly involved.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Frequent colds, cough and blocked nose through the year
Repeated throat or ear infections
Frequent courses of antibiotics
Poor appetite and slow weight gain
Tiredness, irritability and disturbed sleep
Missing school frequently due to illness

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Normal immune development in early childhood
  • Group exposure at daycare, playschool and school
  • Untreated allergic rhinitis or adenoid enlargement
  • Iron, vitamin D or overall nutritional deficiency
  • Passive smoke exposure and indoor air pollution

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • Growth or weight gain is faltering on the growth chart
  • Infections are unusually severe, or need hospital admission
  • There is persistent fever, unexplained bruising or enlarged glands

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

For a preschool child, roughly six to eight upper respiratory infections a year is within the expected range, often clustering in the winter months and in the first year of school. Frequency alone is less concerning than severity, recovery between episodes, and growth.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
