Understanding allergic rhinitis
What it is, and what we look at
In allergic rhinitis the immune system reacts to a harmless substance such as dust, pollen or animal dander as though it were a threat. The nasal lining releases histamine, which produces the familiar cluster of sneezing, watery discharge, blocked nose and itching of the nose, eyes and palate.
It is often seasonal, but in Hyderabad many patients report a year-round pattern tied to indoor dust and early-morning temperature change. Case taking maps out when the symptoms start, what makes them worse, and whether asthma or eczema also runs alongside — the three frequently occur together.

Asked before the first visit
They are related but not identical. Allergic rhinitis affects the nasal lining; sinusitis is inflammation of the sinus cavities and often follows repeated rhinitis. Untreated long-standing rhinitis is a common route to recurrent sinusitis, which is why the two are assessed together.
