Understanding post-covid syndrome

What it is, and what we look at

Most people recover from COVID-19 within a few weeks. In a minority, symptoms persist or new ones appear, lasting three months or longer without another explanation — commonly called long COVID. The pattern varies: fatigue and post-exertional worsening, breathlessness, palpitations, difficulty concentrating, altered smell or taste, disturbed sleep and low mood.

Because the symptoms overlap with several other conditions, assessment first excludes the treatable ones — anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, vitamin D and B12 deficiency, and importantly cardiac and lung complications, which occasionally follow infection. Recovery for most people is gradual, and pacing rather than pushing is the approach where exertion clearly worsens symptoms.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Fatigue that persists for months after infection
Breathlessness and reduced exercise tolerance
Difficulty concentrating and word-finding — brain fog
Palpitations, or racing heart on standing
Persistent loss or distortion of smell and taste
Disturbed sleep, low mood and anxiety

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Persistent immune activation after the infection
  • Deconditioning following a prolonged illness
  • Lung or heart involvement during the acute infection
  • Coexisting anaemia, thyroid or vitamin deficiency
  • Severity of the original illness, though mild cases can also be affected

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • There is chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting — seek assessment promptly
  • There is calf swelling or pain, or sudden breathlessness — clots need excluding urgently
  • Symptoms are worsening rather than gradually improving

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Most people improve gradually over weeks to months, though a minority have symptoms lasting considerably longer. Improvement is often uneven, with better and worse periods rather than a straight line, which is worth expecting rather than being alarmed by.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
