Understanding eating disorders
What it is, and what we look at
Eating disorders involve a disturbance in eating behaviour alongside intense preoccupation with weight, body shape or food. They are not lifestyle choices or phases. Anorexia nervosa carries one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric illness, through both medical complications and suicide, and physical consequences include heart rhythm disturbance, electrolyte imbalance, bone loss and infertility.
This needs to be said directly: eating disorders require a specialist team — psychiatry, psychological therapy and dietetic input, sometimes medical monitoring or inpatient care. Homeopathic treatment is not an appropriate primary treatment and should never delay referral. Where a patient is already under specialist care, supportive treatment for sleep, digestion and anxiety can be given alongside.
Symptoms
You may recognise these
Causes & triggers
What tends to be behind it
- Genetic predisposition and family history
- Perfectionism, anxiety and low self-esteem
- Social and media pressure around body image
- Dieting, which frequently precedes onset
- Trauma, bullying or major life transition
When to see a doctor promptly
Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:
- There is fainting, chest pain, palpitations or severe weakness — seek emergency care
- There are thoughts of self-harm — seek help the same day, or call Tele-MANAS on 14416
- There is rapid weight loss, vomiting after meals, or periods have stopped
How we work
Our approach at the clinic
Individualised prescribing
Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.
Detailed case taking
Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.
Works alongside your doctor
We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions
Asked before the first visit
It is not an appropriate primary treatment, and we will say so. Eating disorders need psychiatric and psychological care with dietetic support, and anorexia in particular can be medically dangerous. If you come to us with these symptoms, our role is to make sure you reach the right specialist quickly.

Talk to a doctor about your case
Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
