Understanding psoriasis

What it is, and what we look at

In psoriasis the skin renewal cycle speeds up from around a month to a few days. Cells pile up before the older ones shed, producing well-defined red patches with silvery scale — most often on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. It is not contagious and it is not caused by poor hygiene.

Psoriasis is a relapsing and remitting condition; it settles and returns. Treatment is judged on how much skin is involved, how often flares occur, and how much it affects sleep, confidence and daily life. Stress, infections, certain medicines and skin injury are recognised flare triggers, and identifying yours is part of the case taking.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Raised red patches covered with silvery-white scale
Dry, cracked skin that may bleed on scratching
Itching, burning or soreness over the patches
Thickened, pitted or ridged nails
Scalp scaling that extends past the hairline
Joint pain and stiffness in some patients

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Immune system dysfunction affecting skin cell turnover
  • Family history — psoriasis frequently runs in families
  • Psychological stress, a well-documented flare trigger
  • Streptococcal throat infection, particularly in guttate psoriasis
  • Skin injury, sunburn, smoking and certain medications

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • Joints become painful, swollen or stiff — this may be psoriatic arthritis
  • Redness spreads over most of the body with fever or chills
  • Plaques become intensely painful, weeping or pus-filled

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

No system of medicine currently cures psoriasis. It is a long-term condition that can be brought into remission for extended periods and then relapse. Anyone promising a permanent cure is overstating what is known. Treatment is measured by how clear the skin stays and how long remission lasts.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
