Understanding eczema (atopic dermatitis)

What it is, and what we look at

In eczema the skin barrier does not hold moisture well and reacts readily to irritants. The result is dryness, intense itching and inflamed patches, classically in the elbow and knee creases in children and on the hands, neck and eyelids in adults. Scratching damages the barrier further, which drives the itch-scratch cycle that keeps flares going.

Eczema is part of the atopic group, so a personal or family history of asthma or nasal allergy is common. Case taking covers the flare pattern, seasonal variation, soaps and fabrics in use, sleep disturbance and any food association reported by the family.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Intense itching, often worse at night
Dry, scaly, rough patches of skin
Redness and small fluid-filled bumps that may ooze
Thickened, leathery skin from long-term scratching
Cracks and fissures, especially on hands and feet
Skin infections following broken skin

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • An impaired skin barrier, often genetically influenced
  • Family history of eczema, asthma or allergic rhinitis
  • Soaps, detergents, wool and synthetic fabrics
  • Dust mites, pollen, sweat and dry winter air
  • Stress, which reliably worsens itching for many patients

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • Patches become painful, crusted, golden-yellow or pus-filled
  • Fever accompanies a sudden widespread flare
  • Sleep is repeatedly disturbed by itching, in a child or adult

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

No. Regular emollient use is the foundation of eczema care in every guideline and there is no reason to stop it. Apply generously and frequently, especially after bathing.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
