Understanding crohn's disease

What it is, and what we look at

Unlike ulcerative colitis, which is confined to the large intestine, Crohn's disease can involve any part of the gut from mouth to anus, most commonly the end of the small intestine and the start of the colon. The inflammation goes through the full thickness of the bowel wall, which is why it can lead to strictures, fistulas and abscesses over time.

It follows a relapsing and remitting course and requires gastroenterology supervision, usually with long-term maintenance medication. Homeopathic care here is supportive only and is given alongside specialist treatment — never as a substitute. Nutritional deficiency is common in Crohn's because absorption is affected, so iron, B12, vitamin D and weight are tracked as part of care.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Persistent diarrhoea, sometimes with blood
Cramping abdominal pain, often in the lower right side
Unintended weight loss and reduced appetite
Fatigue and low-grade fever
Mouth ulcers
Pain or discharge around the anus from fistulas

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Immune-mediated inflammation of the bowel wall
  • Genetic predisposition and family history
  • Alterations in gut bacteria
  • Smoking, which clearly worsens Crohn's disease
  • Flares triggered by NSAIDs and gut infections

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • There is severe abdominal pain with vomiting and no passage of gas — possible obstruction
  • There is heavy bleeding, high fever or a tender swollen abdomen
  • Weight loss continues, or a new opening or abscess appears near the anus

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Ulcerative colitis is limited to the colon and affects only the inner lining continuously. Crohn's can affect any part of the digestive tract in patches and involves the full bowel wall thickness, which is why complications such as strictures and fistulas occur in Crohn's but not typically in colitis.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
