Understanding ulcerative colitis

What it is, and what we look at

Ulcerative colitis is an immune-mediated inflammation of the colon lining. It follows a relapsing and remitting course — periods of remission interrupted by flares of bloody diarrhoea, urgency, cramping and fatigue. It is a lifelong condition requiring gastroenterology supervision and, in many cases, long-term maintenance medication.

Homeopathic care here is explicitly supportive and runs alongside specialist treatment. Stopping maintenance medication is not advised, because it raises the risk of a flare and of complications. What supportive care can address is general wellbeing, sleep, anxiety and nutritional status between flares.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Diarrhoea containing blood or mucus
Urgency, and needing to pass stool at night
Lower abdominal cramping relieved after passing stool
Fatigue and unintended weight loss
Reduced appetite and anaemia
Joint pain, eye or skin involvement in some patients

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • Immune-mediated inflammation of the colonic lining
  • Genetic predisposition and family history
  • Alterations in gut bacteria
  • Environmental factors and previous gut infection
  • Flares triggered by NSAIDs, infection and, for some, stress

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • There is heavy rectal bleeding, or you feel faint and dizzy
  • Severe abdominal pain with a distended abdomen and fever — seek emergency care
  • More than six bloody stools a day, or symptoms not settling with usual treatment

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

No. Maintenance medication in ulcerative colitis is what keeps remission going, and stopping it is a common route to a flare. Any change belongs with your gastroenterologist. Homeopathic treatment here is given alongside it.
