Understanding allergies

What it is, and what we look at

In allergy, the immune system produces IgE antibodies against a normally harmless substance. On re-exposure, histamine and other chemicals are released, causing the reaction. It may show up in the nose as allergic rhinitis, in the skin as hives or eczema, in the chest as asthma, or in the gut as vomiting and cramps. The same person often has several of these together.

Severity varies enormously. Most reactions are uncomfortable but not dangerous; anaphylaxis is a rapid, whole-body reaction with airway swelling and collapse that is a medical emergency. Anyone who has had a severe reaction should be assessed by an allergy specialist and carry an adrenaline auto-injector if one is prescribed. Case taking maps timing, exposure and severity, and identifies which pattern you have.

Symptoms

You may recognise these

Sneezing, running or blocked nose and itchy eyes
Raised itchy welts on the skin
Wheezing, cough or chest tightness
Swelling of lips, eyelids or face
Vomiting, cramping or diarrhoea after a specific food
Reactions after insect stings or specific medicines

Causes & triggers

What tends to be behind it

  • House dust mites, pollen, mould and animal dander
  • Foods — commonly milk, egg, nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish
  • Medicines, particularly certain antibiotics and NSAIDs
  • Insect stings and latex
  • Family history of allergy, asthma or eczema

When to see a doctor promptly

Homeopathic treatment is not the right first step for these. Seek medical assessment if:

  • There is difficulty breathing, throat tightness, swelling of the tongue, or collapse — this is anaphylaxis, call emergency services immediately
  • A reaction follows a food, medicine or sting and involves more than one body system
  • You have previously had a severe reaction — see an allergy specialist about an adrenaline auto-injector

How we work

Our approach at the clinic

Individualised prescribing

Homeopathy selects a remedy for the person, not only the diagnosis. Two patients with the same condition often receive different remedies.

Detailed case taking

Your first visit covers medical history, family history, current medication, diet, sleep and stress — all of it informs the prescription.

Works alongside your doctor

We never ask you to stop prescribed medication on your own. Any change is made gradually and in consultation with your treating physician.

Common questions

Asked before the first visit

Usually not as a first step. Testing is most useful when guided by a clear history of a suspected trigger. Broad panels produce positives to things a person tolerates perfectly well, which leads to unnecessary avoidance — particularly harmful when it removes food groups from a child's diet.

Talk to a doctor about your case

Bring your reports and current prescriptions. The first consultation is a full case assessment, and you will be told plainly if another specialist is the better route.
